Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a metabolic disorder resulting from a defect in insulin secretion, insulin action, or both. Ramadan is a lunar-based month, and its duration varies between 29 and 30 days. Its timing changes with respect to seasons. Depending on the geographical location and season, the duration of the daily fast may range from a few to more than 20 h. The fasting in Ramadan is possible for many chronically ill patients who are stable and are under medical supervision. Major risks associated with fasting in patients with diabetes are (Hypoglycemia - Diabetic ketoacidosis or hyperglycemic hyperosmolar states - Dehydration and increased risk of thrombosis) Benefits from Ramadan fasting seem to appear only in patients who maintain their appropriate diets.
