Abstract Acute airway inflammation is characterized by rapid activation of airway mast cells and macrophages which release the proinflammatory mediators such as histamine and eicosanoid which lead to airway smooth muscle contraction, mucous secretion and vasodilatation.Chronic airway inflammation is characterized by involvement of many cells such as T- cell, eosinophils, mast cells, macrophages, epithelial cells, fibroblasts, and smooth muscle cells. But eosinophils play an effector role in chronic inflammation. Bronchial hyperresponsivness is an abnormal tendency of the bronchi to contract following the exposure to a variety of stimuli as allergens, cold air, and others. Bronchial hyperresponsivness is a fundamantal abnormality in asthma.Airway remodeling is the structural changes in airway wall that develop by repair and resolution The most important chronic airway inflammatory disease is bronchial asthma wich is a disease of reversible airflow obstruction and hyperresponsivness of airways to various stimuli. |
