Abstract

The aim of this work is to evaluate the Upper Cretaceous Formations in Abu Darag Area in the northern part of the Gulf of Suez Area, Egypf. In the Gulf of Suez region, the Upper Cretaceous section consists mostly of five formations arranged as Sudr, Matulla, Wata, Abu Qada and Raha Formations from top to bottom. These formations are studied using well log data and some seismic sections. The well log data obtained from five different wells distributed in the study area. These wells are Daragl7-1A, X80-1, Darag23-1, Misalla-S 1X and Misalla-E 1X wells. The Sudr Formation is represented only in Daragl7-1A well. The Matulla Formation is recorded in Daragl7-1A and X80-I wells. The Wata Formation is found in all wells. The Abu Qada Formation is represented in X80-I, Darag23-1 and Misalla-S wells and the Raha Formation is recorded in all wells except in Misalla-E well. The methods of study are achieved through number of sequential steps:- Seismic investigation study is used to give an idea about the structural setting in the study area. The available data consists of several seismic sections distributed in the area and velocity data survey for some wells in the area. The purpose of this study was the evaluation of Upper Cretaceous Formations in Abu Darag area in the North Gulf of Suez. But, since the Upper Cretaceous section is not represented well in allover the area it is diffecult to continue tracing of Upper Cretaceous boundaries. For this reason, the most optimum horizons were selected to be interpreted. Kareem, Rudies and Nukhul Formations were the three important reflectors to be studied using seismic interpretation methods. Three two-way time contour maps for the forementioned reflectors are constructed. The area is considered as tilted fault block dipping in NW direction disected by many faults where some of highs and lows structures are represented. Five seismic sections are interpreted where the Kareem, Rudies and Nukhul Formations are detected on the first three sections and those three reflectors in addition to the Upper and Lower.
