Abstract

Infection after internal fixation is one of the most serious problems in orthopedic surgery that may leads to high level of hospital stay and costly use of the antibiotics. This study concerns the results and some essential points in the treatment of acute infection after osteosynthesis using immediate antibiotics, continuous suction-irrigation and debridement. from November 1993 until january 1996, a total of twenty patients were diagnosed and treated for infected internal fixation. The lower limb had been affected in eighteen cases and upper limb in two cases. Femur was affected in 75% and tibia in 15% and metacarpals in 10%. The fractures mostly caused by traffic accident.
