Abstract
The majorPty of the studies on heterosis in Egyptian cotton have been primarily concerned with its effects on the et tributes of the mature plant. Increased yield of hybrids as compared with thei.r parents hes been well documented (see Review of Literature). The primary objective of the preaent study, however, was to examine the effects of heterosis throughout the complete l i f e span of the plant. Specisl emphasis was given t o obtaining a better understanbing of heterotic effects on the growth and developmentd patterns which ultimtely lead t o increased yield. The pre~ent study involved five main parts. These were : I. y i e l d and its components; 11. early seedling growth; 111. immediate effect of hybridization on chemical constituents of the cotton seed; IV. immediate effect of hybridization on electrophoretic patterns and V. growth and flowering curves measured on individually spaced plants. The parental lines used i n this study included nine Egyptian cotton varieties. Bulk selfed seed of each of the nine parental lines and bulked Fl seed of each of five crosses (Dandara x Giza 70, Ashmouni x Giza 45, Giza 67 x Giza 69, Menoufi x Giza 70 and Giza 66 x Giza 77) were produced i n 1982 and 1983 growing seasons for 1983 and 1984 f i e l d experiments, respectively.
