Abstract

The study of Sedimentary environments and hydrocerrbon potentictlities of the Kh~irit~r Formation, Central part of Abu Gharcrdig Basin, Western Desert, wus determined by the [rid of petrogrcrphic examinertion, XRD analysis, SEM stu& ns well cis composite crnd, ir ire line logs(density, neutron, resistivity, NGS, ....) The lower Cretaceous sediments of the Khariru Formation consist mciinly of moderately to well consolidated sandstones, argillaceous sandstones and mudstones. The sandstones are muinlv quartz arenite, rangingpom veryJine to medium -grcrined sand sizes. Twelve lithqfucies types were recognized and three lilhcfacies associations are determined in the Khuritu Forn7crtion. The three lithofacies associations can be tentatively distinguished on the av~~il~wbilree line logs using 0 combination of GR logs with neutron and density czn-ves The Kharita Formation was subdivided, om top to buse, into the Khcrritu A, B, C, and D zn~its based on wireline logs. The environment of deposition of each unit uus determined using sedimentological data und NGS logs The sediment of the Kharitcr D wxr deposited by .flzivicil channels, and this was followed by the Khuritcr C which represents ct phcrse of lo~t~,flzrviecrrlc tivity, when a deltaic plain converted to a widsprecrd lagoon A renew injlzrx of clcrstic sediments occzn-red at the base of the Kharita B which hus led to the development of ht.ocrci scindy cocrstcrl plcrin pi-ohcil~l~~ through braided channels These snna’y coe/stcil plciins persisted dzrring the clepo~~tioonf the Khuritu A.
