Abstract In Egypt,b erseem (Tz-ifoli um alexa. .n drinum) is the main forage crop, available for feeding farm animals during winter time (December-May) . It may be claimed that the produced green clover exceeds the animal requirements during this period. It is then advisable, to conserve some of forage in the form of hay or silage to be used during summer period (June-November) whm animals are usually suffering from hunger caused by shortage in feeds. Moreover, berseem contains excess of digestible protein in respect to the requirement of animals (250%). while it covers only 93% of energy requirement (Youssef, 1978) . The above situation could be partially con-ected .by minimizing the waste in feeding clover in winter by making good quality hay or ensiling. It had been reported that losses in dry matter during hay making from the 1 st cut of berseem reached about 30%. Therefore, it is reasonable to conserve the 1 st cut of -- berseem as silage to minimize the losses in different nutrients. A2so,silage could be made from the first cut of berseem because the weather cor~dlii or~se, upclal l y lrr the north of the Delta, are unsuitable for hay making by using traditional methods of drying (for uxicr~~plyu rou~d curing methods). |
