Abstract

Peanut is one of the important legume crops because of its high content of oil and protein. It iscultivatedin Egypt mainly in loamy and newly reclaimed sandy soi1s. Root-rot and wi1ting caused by Fusarium soani and root-knot caused by the nematode Me’loidogyne javanica are the most important soi lborne diseases attacking peanut in Egypt. However, chemical control of these diseases using fungicides and nematocides interferes with symbiotic nitrogen fixation and leads to a drastic reduction in plant growth and yield . The aim of the present work was to study the effect of fungicides (using Vitavax) and nematocides (using Temik) on the symbiotic nitrogen fixationin peanut. The study aimed also at selecting of effectives trains of peanut-rhizobia which can tolerate or resist the deleterious effects of these pesticides both in greenhouse and under field conditions. Successful selection and application of such strains would provide then a simple method allowing vigorous symbiotic N2- fixation and plant protection simultaneously.
