Abstract Hematological abnormalities such as anemia, granulocytopenia, thrombocytopenia or atypical lymphocytosis may occur frequently during the course of acute viral hepatitis. Frank bone marrow aplasia, however is a rare but significant sequelae of this disease. The pathogenic link between these hematological disorders and hepatitis in the majority of cases appears to be due to infection with non-A, non-B virus131. This virus also infects bone marrow cells and inhibits bone marrow progenirator cell proliferation. Several immunologic defects have been reported in these patients. |
