Abstract The main a i m of present i n v e s t i g a t i o n s w a s t o evaluate the e f f e c t of the discharge of industry wastes and municipal r e f u s e s on heavy metals accumulation i n Nile water and some canals with t h e r e use f o r irrigation in Egypt. They are based on randomized samples of wzter of t h e N i l e , the Rosette branch, El-Mahmodya c a n a l , and some o t h e r c a n a l s used f o r f i e l d i r r i g a t i o n . The p o s s i b l e mobility of heavy metals i n Egyptian s o i l s and the uptake of heavy metals by some important a g r i - c u l t u r a l crops on calcareous s o i l s w a s studied i n greenhouse experiments. To study t h e mobility andaccumulation of the metals Cu, Mn, Zn, N i , and C r through an a l k a l i n e s o i l , leaching experiments were performed f o r seven months with upper l a y e r s (0-20 cm) contaminated or not-contaminated s o i l columns. They were leached with v a r i a b l e amounts of heavy metals under submerged, o r not-submerged conditions with or without the presence of C1. |
