Abstract

The premenstrual syndorme is a major c l i n i c a l e n t i t y a f f e c t i n g a large number of females. It has long been known t h a t when women become t e n s e , i r r i t a b l e or depressed i n t h e premenstrual week, a temporary d e t e r i o r a t i o n i n t h e i r i n t e r p e r s o n a l r e l a t i o n s h i p s f r e q u e n t l y develops. So, i t was worthwhile t o throw l i g h t on the possible r e l a t i o n s h i p s af imbalance of t r a c e and abundant elements t o t h e occurrence of premenstrual syndrome and to r e v e a l whether therapy of t h i s syndrome a f f e c t s t h e imbalance of metala i n r e l e - vance t o f l u i d r e t e n t i o n . In hope such e t u d i e s may help improving the q u a l i t y of l i f e of those premenstrual syndrome s u f f e r e r s with aevere symptoms. The present study was c a r r i e d out on (31) f e r t i l e females. They were divided i n t o 3 groups; c o n t r o l group of (9) women and two symptomatic groups composed of (13) women aging 25-35 years (mean 27) and 8 women aging >35-45 years (mean 36.8). A l l females were int erviwed t w i c e w i t h i n every cycle once on the t e n t h day and once on the twenty s i x t h day of the cycle f o r s i x cansequetive cycles. Recording of any abnormal complaint oc cur r ing between days 23+- 2 days i n a standardised 28 days cycle and severe enough to i n t e r f e r e with home, social and working l i v e s were noted. Early morning blood sample was drawn on 09.00 h. on days 10 and 26 of each cycle and serum 1:evels of elements; Ca +2 , M~,+ K+~ , ~a,+ ~ CU+~ and ~n+we~re assayed i n each sample by using an atomic absorption spectrophotometric technique. Then ten p a t i e n t s i d e n t i f i e d with notable premenstr u a l symptoms received moduretie ( d i u r e t i c ) f o r 7-10 days before the onset of menses during 3 consequetive cycles. The selected elements under study were reassessed on the twenty s i x t h day of the cycle a f t e r termination of therapy .
