Abstract
T o t a l a l k a l i n i t y g r e a t l y a f f e c t e d by t h e o r i g i n of t h e d o m i n a t i n g water and t h e d i s t r i b u t i o n of utb& which consums p a r t of t h e d i s s o l v e d C02 d a r i n g g r o w t h . A l t h - ough t h e mean v a l u e s w a s more o r less t h e same a t t h e d i f f - e r e n t s t a t i o n s t h e r e w a s a wide r a n g e of v a r i a t i o n s a t e a c h s t a t i o n t h r o u g h t h e y e a r . S e a s o n a l v a r i a t i o n of a l k a l i n i t y was more o r less p a r a l l e l i n ponds 11.,8 and 9 and a pronunced d e c r e a s e was d e t e c t e d d u r i n g t h e growth p e r i o d of S. p a p y r u s . The pH v a l u e of t h e ponds l i e d on t h e a l k a l i n e s i d e and r a n g e d f r o m 7 . 9 0 t o 1 0 . 1 . The c h a n g e s b e i n g m a i n l y due t o v a r i a t i o n s i n t h e p h o t o s y n t h e t i c a c t i v i t y of t h e p h y t o p l a n k t o n and a q u a t i c p l a n t s . S e a s o n a l v a r i a t i o n s were more o r less p a r a l l e l c u r v e s i n ponds 11,8 and 9 . D i s s o v l e d oxygen showed pronounced i n c r e a s e d u r i n g A p r i l (9.4 - 1 1 . 9 mg02/L.) accompaning t h e g r o w t h p e r i o d of S. p a p y r u s and p h y t o p l a n k t o n p o p u l a t i o n . O t h e r r e l a t - i v e l y i n c r e a s e s were o b s e r v e d i n w i n t e r ( J a n u a r y ) due t o t h e s t r o n g e f f e c t of winds and d r a i n w a t e r s .
