Abstract
Seven c u l t i v a r s of Oryza s a t i v a were used i n the p r e s e n t s t u d y , namely : Sabene, IR 28, Reiho, Giza 159, Giza l71., Giza 172 and Giza 175, a l l of them are c u l t i v a t e d i n Egypt a s f i e l d crops. This study includes the following topics : 1. Tissue c u l t u r e and morphological s t u d i e s Grains of the rice c u l t i v a r s were placed on c a l l u s induction nledium, and a f t e r 3 sul~~ultu~t hees produced c a l l i were t r a n s f e r r e d t o the r e g e n e r a t i o n medium t o produce regenerated p l a n t s . The regenerated p l a n t s were then planted i n t o potted s o i l s . The growth of these p l a n t s was compared with t h a t of p l a n t s c u l t i v a t e d from g r a i n s under greenhouse conditions. 2. Cytological s t u d i e s Karyotype a n a l y s i s : Squash p r e p a r a t i o n s of r o o t t i p s were s t a i n e d according t o the Giernsa C-banding t echniclue i n order t o determine the number of chromosomes and s i z e and d i s t r i b u t i o n of lleterochromatic bands.
