Abstract A new laser dye that is 1,4-bis (4-pyridyl-2-vinyl) benzene (P4VB) has been identified. The dye gives laser a emission in the range 377-450 nm ( max = 415 nm) upon pumping ~o-~dmM-3 solutions in DMSO with a nitrogen laser ( *ex.= 337.1 nm, peak power 100 KW). In microemulsion media containing cyclohexane as the oil phase, P4VB shows higher photochemical quantum yield (gC) and lower fluorescence quantum yield (flf) values. The iso-electronic laser dyes 1,4-bis (J-pyridyl-2-vinyl) benzene (P2VB) and 2,5- distyrylpyrazine (DSP) have also been studied in relation to medium effects. The electronic absorption, emission and excitation spectra of Ga-.tetraphenyl porphyrin-and Ge-and Sn- tetra (p-methyl-phenyl- porphyrin chlorides have been studied both in cyclohexane and in microemulsion media. The spectral data indicate minimal aggregation of the complexes in microemulsions. The fluorescence quantum yield (gf) values are generally higher in microemulsion media compared with cyclohexane. Solutionsof the complexes are generally unstable upon prolonged photoirradiation giving open macrorings. A photochemical electron transfer from benzidine to the porphyrin complexes is induced by photoirradiation (aex= 420 nm) giving the characteristic blue benzidine monoradical |
