Abstract AIM AND SCOPE OF THE PRESENT WORK: The present work comprises regional petrographic, opaque mineralogical, geochemical and mineral chemistry studies on the gabbroic rocks in Egypt. This work is the first attempt in Egypt for a mineral chemistry study of the mafic and opaque minerals on the representative occurrences of these gabbroic rocks in order to find out the main differences which could lead to a further precise discriminations between the two gabbros. In a broad sense, the scope of the present work can be summarized in the following main points: Sampling of the most important gabbroic localities covering the different type and ages and field relations and observation studies. Detailed petrographic studies, including microscopic determination of the mineral composition, the characteristic textures and modal composition using the point counter. Study of the opaque mineralogy of the present rock masses including mineral identifications, modal analysis and intergrowth relationships of opaque minerals. Some approach on the ophiolitic affinity classification, magma type and past tectonic environment in the light of the plate tectonic framework.Petrochemistry of the gabbroic rocks were also treated. Electron microprobe analysis for some individual minerals to reveal the mineral chemistry of these gabbroic rocks. Discussion on the genesis and characterstic features of the various gabbroic types. I,t is. believed that the realization of such an aim can also help in classifying these rocks among themselves and among the other rock units occurring in the Basement Complex of Egypt. |
