Abstract

The present work concerns solely the detailed petrographical and sedimentologfcal studies on the sedimentary rocks of the Igla Formation, the bese of the Hammamat Group, in order t o t h r o w more light on this part i n the geological history of the basement complex of Egypt. The exposure of the Hammamat group a t Wadi El-Hammamat represents the largest and the most complete succession, yet known i n Egypt, It covers an area of about 400 km 2 along the western flank of the basement complex, 55 km long i n a N-S dimction. The rock samples constituting the material of the present study (124 samples) were collected from two chosen sections from the Igla Formation a t Wadi El-Hammamat, which had been previously mapped and lithostratigraphicslly studied by Noweir (1968) and Akaad & Noweir (1969). These two sections include, Wadi El-Shihimiya-Urn Hargel section (about 2000 m) and Wadi Atshan section (about 1130 m). The present study of the Igla Formation constitutes, i n the main, petrographical and sedimentological studies.
