Abstract

I n t h e press~ts tudy, an e f f o r t h a s been designed t o furnish some physiological and biochemical infomations about the pathogenicity of some helminthic p a r a s i t e s , in two Egypti~w i ld b i r d s . The 1st b i r d i s ,Streptopel& (...csenegalensis agRNptiaca (Dove) and the second one is -i b i s -i b i s (Heron), The pathogenci ty of t h e two tapevtomn s p e c i e s Cot~-g-ni ap &y-ac-a-n-th a and .=ll-igrewia styeptopelia-e i n t h e first b i r d and of t h e two trmatode s p e c i e s Ne.phsro_stonm_ - ranosu-m -an d kpharvngo-s-trig ea -i b i s i n the second bird, is the subject of the present work. The investigations which were done i n the bird species are: - Some hematological. .parmeters, such as red blood cell count, haemoglobin concentration and packed c e l l volume a% well as some diagnostic signs such as mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscu3.ar haemoglobin and me= corpuscular haemogl obin concentration. - Some blood proteins, such as t o t a l serum proteins, afbmin, globulin and A/G satia, - Uric acid l e v e l s in blood as a final excreteroy product in birds. - Body weights, - Some blood minerals such as calciurn and inorganic pl?_o;z;- phorcw , The pathogenic alternations in the physiological an3 biochemical processes are,: The icfected doves: r-- Single _ii(one tapeworm species ) ; The inf e c t ion by two tapewarms of -Co-tug-n-ia_ p-.., o ly I& - _, .a-- =- cantha ( l ight s ingle iklfection) did not e l i c i t pathcg(:n.i<; -- aS-ternatlons, but over t h i s number (heavy single infectLou) cauld do, The pathogenic al.ternations fi. heavy siagic infection by this tapeworm were in the form of macrocj~tic anaemia; hypoprot einemia, hypoalbuminemia loger ABG m%io and normal levels of both globulins and serum wic acid; lower body weights; lower levelj,of both serum, calcium and inorganic phosphorous, The infection by one tapewom of Killigrewia streptopeuae (light single infection) d i d not e l i c i t pathogenic alternations, but over t h i s number (heavy single infection) could do, The pathogenic alternations in heavy single . Lnf ect ion 3r~th is tapeworm were in the f o rm of 1iypochromi.c nomoc ytic anaemia ; hypoprot einemia, hypoalbuminemia lavex: A/G r a t i o and noma1 levels i n both globulins and serm uric acid, lower body weights; lower l e v e l s of both serum, calcium and inorganic phosphorous, M-ul t ipl e i n f e c t i o n (two tapeworm s p e c i e s ) : This level of imnection conmonly e l i c i t e d pathogenic alternations, The mild one ( l i g h t multiple i n f e c t i o n ) showed normochroinFc nomocytic anaemia; hypoalbminemia, iiyperglobulinemia, lower A/G r a t i o and normal l e v e l s of both total. serum proteins 2nd serum uric acid; lower body weights; and liormal l e v e l of serum inorganic phosphorous bat lower calcium l e v e l , The sevare one (heavy multiple iMection) showed hypochromic rnacrocytic anaemia; hypoproteinenia, , hypoalbminemia, higher level of serum u r i c acid and nmma1 l e v e l of glolulin in males but females exhibited hypglobulinemia; lower body weights, lower levels of both serm calcium and inorganis phoaphoroas, The infected herons: Single irrfec tion (one trematode species) : The i n f e c t i o n by thee trematodes of Neplzrostomum ranosum ( l i g h t siele i n f e c t i o n ) did not e l i c i t pathogenic a l t e r n a t i o n s , but over t h i s ntmber {heavy single i n f e c t i o n ) could do, The pathogenic a l t e r n a t i o n s were i n the form of nornochromic nomocytic anaemia; hypoprot einernia, hypoalbumminemia, byperglobulinemis, Lower A/ G r a t i o and higher l e v e l of serm uric acid; Eower body weights; lower levels of both scrm calcium and inorganic phosphorous, The infection by 25 trematodes of Apharyngoatrigia -ibis d i d not e l i c i t pathogenic a l t e r n a t i o n s , but over t h i s number could do, The pathogenic a l t e r n a t i o n s were in the f om of hypochromic nomocytic anaemia; hypoprot ?inemia, hypoalbuminemia, byperglobullnemia, lower A/G r a t i o and higher l e v e l of serm . uric acid; lower body weights; lower l e v e l s of both serum calcdrum and inorganic phosphorous. Multiple infection (TWO trematode species) : This level of i n f e c t i o n cornonly elicited pathogenic alternations, The mild one (light nultiple infection) showed nomoohro~nic nomocytic anaemia g bypoprot einemia, hypotzlbumhem%a, hyperglobulinerida, 1 ower A/G ratio and higher level of serum uric acid? lower body weights; lower love1 of serum calcium but noimal, l e v e l of inorganic phosphorous, The severe one (heavy multiple i n f e c t i o n ) intensified the pathogenic a l t e r n a t i o n s , These a l t e r n a t - ions were Ln the form of hypochomic nonnocytic anaemia; hypoprot eigemia, hypoalbuminemia, normal level of globulin in males but hypoglobu3inemi.a in f males, lower A/G r a t i o and higher level of serum uric acid# lower body - weights; lower l e v e l s of both serum calcium and inorganic phosphorous, Generally the present findings r e f l e c t some implications such as: - There is a correlationskip between the e l i c i t e d pathogenic alternations and the parasite number, i.e. the increase in the parasite number commonly i n t e n s i f i e s their pathogenicity i n the infected b i r d s . - There is a l s o a correlationship between the e l i c i t e d hypoproteinemia cawed by the present parasites i n the investigated b i r d s and the other physiological processes such as anaemia, body weight loss and the low levels of serum caloZlln and inorganic phosphorous. The high levels of serum uric acid indicate that the investigated birds are hypercatabolic.
