Abstract

With the rapid growth of the Internet and the popularity of the World Wide Web. web-based educational systems are becoming ever more attractive. Among these, adaptive hypermedia systems (AHS) in particular have been playing an important role in the educational environment. AHS can be useful in any application area where the system is expected to be used by people with different goals and knowledge and where the hyperspace is reasonably big.
Two main problems exist with educational hypermedia systems (EHS): 1-lack of adapting the system to student behavior in presentation. 2- lack of adapting the system to student behavior in navigation. AHS are useful to solve these problems. Adaptive educational hypermedia system (AEHS) is one of the earliest applications of AHS and is currently the most popular application in the field of adaptive systems.
In this work, an adaptive educational hypermedia prototype system is developed. The developed system named Educational Hypermedia Adaptive System (EHAS) involves three models: the domain model, the student model and the adaptive model. The Decision Tables approach is used to represent the adaptive rules included in the adaptive model.
The adaptation is based on the student model which contains information about the student. The EHAS system gathers information about the student by observing his browsing behavior and automatically updating the student model.
Moreover, four recent adaptive e-learning models were chosen, analyzed and discussed. The chosen models were compared with the proposed one. The comparative study is done according to a set of standard criteria. The comparison result shows that the proposed EHAS and its adaptation features provide an efficient, easy to-use tool that positively influences user knowledge acquisition and consequently leads to better learning results.
