Abstract

The synthesis of polymethyl methacrylate nanocomposite was studied using sodium montmorillonite clay. The structural aspects of synthesis of nanocomposite using sodium montmorillonite were studied. Three different materials were used to identify the type of nanocomposite induced. Polyoxyethylene sorbitan monostearate, tween60, polyoxyethylene sorbitan monooleate, Tween80, and sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS). The XRD confirmed the absorption of three emulsifiers. That was confirmed by the increase of the d- spacing of the montmorillonite. The polymerization was performed by the emulsion polymerization technique. Using tween 60 as an emulsifier, it was found out that an intercalated type nanocomposite was produced as indicated by XRD analysis. The FTIR analysis indicated the presence of the clay within the PMMA. The TEM revealed an intercalated and exfoliated type nanocomposite. The thermal properties were improved as indicated by TGA and DSC.
Using polyoxyethylene sorbitan monooleate, tween80, used as a surfactant. No peaks were detected by the XRD analysis indicating an exfoliated-type nanocomposite. The transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis showed separate clay lamellae for both nanocomposites contain 2 & 6% of Na-montmorillonite clay while the TEM of the nanocomposite containing 4% Na-clay showed both intercalated type- nanocomposite and exfoliated type as well. The nanocomposite of PMMA showed a better thermal stability via thermogravimetric analysis. The viscosity average molecular weight measurements of the nanocomposite revealed.
The nanocomposite of PMMA using SDS as the emulsifier, showed no peaks by the XRD analysis. The TEM confirmed an exfoliated type nanocomposite. The viscosity average molecular weight was almost same relative to pure polymer. It is much higher relative to that obtained using tween60 or Tween80 as emulsifiers. The thermal stability was not changed but the residual amount of the polymer at 450 °C degrees was high and increased with the polymer content.
