Abstract

Much attention has been focused on the protective biochemical function of naturally occurring antioxidants in biological system and on the mechanisms of their action due to their role in the treatment of many diseases due to their safety and efficacy. In the present investigation reference antioxidant drug (Antox) was employed together with aqueous extract of Doum’s fruits. The experiments were divided into: 1) Induction of hyperlipidemia by oral administration of cholesterol - cholic acid mixture in a ratio of 3:1 to male albino rats for 12 weeks in addition to butter that was mixed with the basal diet. 2) Studying the effect of discontinuation of hyperlipidemic mixture to the test rats coupled with simultaneous administration of the test compounds for four weeks.3) The protective effect of the test compounds were employed by administration of hyperlipidemic agents coupled with the test compounds for 12 weeks. The data revealed that, there were increases in total cholesterol, HDL-C, triacylglycerol, total lipids, MDA and SOD levels and a decrease in GSH level after the induction of hyperlipidemia. Experiment 2 and 3 elicited both curative and protective effect of the two doses of aqueous extract of Doum’s fruits where marked improvements in the level of all the test parameters were indicated.
In conclusion: It may be stated that aqueous extract of Doum’s fruits displayed a well marked antioxidant potency equivalent to those recorded by Antox. The data recorded strongly support the efficient use of aqueous extract of Doum’s fruits as a national natural plant product in both protection and treatment of diseases in metabolic lipid profile disturbance.
