Abstract

Field-orientation in electrical machines is the technique by which theac motor can be forced to emulate the de motor. The basic principle isto decouple the torque-current component from the flux-currentcomponent so that these two components can be independentlycontrolled.In fact, field-oriented control (FOC) scheme providessignificant improvement to the dynamic performance of ac motors.
FOC is normally operated at rated flux.Therefore, if the loadreduced considerably, the core losses become so high causing poorefficiency. If significant energy saving is to be obtained, it is necessaryto optimize the efficiency of the two asymmetrical windings inductionmotor. The optimum efficiency is obtained by the evaluation of theoptimal rotor flux level. In addition, the electro-magnetic torque hasbeen also improved while maintaining a fast dynamic response. In thisthesis, a novel approach has been used to evaluate the optimal rotor fluxlevel. This approach is based on Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO).PSO method is a member of the wide category of Swarm Intelligencemethods (SI).
The hardware setup of the drive system and the interface circuitsbetween the Personal Computer (PC) and the system have been implemented. Data acquisition card has been installed in the PC tohandle the data between the PC and the drive system. A two-level; fourswitch voltage source inverter (FSI) with hysteresis-band current controlhas been designed and implemented to drive the system.
The simulation and experimental results of the proposed controlscheme for the drive system have been compared with a conventionalcontrol scheme. The results show that a definite improvement in theefficiency response noticed when the PSO wasobservations show that PSO can be applied for a wide range of variableapplied. Thesespeed drives applications.
