Abstract

the aim of this study was to investigate gender variations in realizing the two speech acts of requsts and apologies in spoken egyptian arabic and spoken american english the study attempted at pipointing similarities and/or differences between egyptian males and females on one side and american males and females on the other side in realizing requests and apologizies both intra- culturally and cross- culturally two instruments were employed to collect data for this study the first was aset of discourse completion tests employed to collect elicited data and the second instrument was observation sheets by which naturally occuring data were obtained the total number of subject of elicited data was 80 forty in each language with an equal number of male and female elicited data were analyzed quantitatively and qualitativey whereas naturally occuring data were analyzed qualitatively only DATA WERE ANALYZED IN THE LIGHT OF THREE FACTORS 1 the sex of the speaker 2 the sex of the recipient 3 the relative status of the interloctors
