Abstract Calcitonin hormone, discovered by Copp et al,, 1962 one of the major calciwn regulating hormones in human ing. Despite nearly twenty years of investigtioni, ttle is known about the exact function and regulation this hormone. Due to the secure around calcitonin; e proper therapeutic use of it is still limited to a few ber of diseases as Paget’s disease and hypercalcemic ndit ions. Our attention was drawn to study the level of carcitonin d its main substrate, calcium, is the cord blood of the ewborns with different gestat.ional ages. Both prematures d fuilterm newborns were subjected for the estimation of alcitonin and calcium level in the cord blood. In our study we have ctivided the newborns into four roups according to their gestational ages. For each newborn. have assessed its gestational oge, Apgar score, weight d a cord blood sample was collected and serum was separated nd calcitonin was estimated by Radio immunoassay (method Clark et al., 1969) and calcium was estimated by c lorimi• trio ethod (Ray Sarkr and Chauhan, 1967). Prom our study we found that there is a steady increase the serum calcitonin in cord blood with the increwie in ie maturity of the Fetus, assessed by its gestational ages. |
