Abstract External fixation had proved to be a vital and essential procedure for the management of open bony fractures. The instellation of the external fixation mounting; when perfectly done, seems to he an easy and non— jeobardizing procedure. If properly done, external fixation for open bony fractures, gives rigid immobilization of the fracture and not of the limb. This allowing early movement, avoiding joint stiffness and minimizinig the risk of venous thrombosis. It also makes possible the easy inspection of the wound, and since the pins are fixed in the bone away from the fracture site, immobilization is provided without increasing the risk of infection that could complicate other methods of immobilization such as internal fixation. External skeletal fixation has the further advantage, in that it allows complementary procedures to be undertaken e.g. on the bone or on the skin without disturbing the fracture itself. As regards the choice of the suitable device for a particular fracture; for grade I Open fracture with minimal soft tissue damage. |
