Abstract

Hysteroscopy is an endoscopic procedure utilizing fiberoptics and usually a method to distend the uterine cavity so that it may be examined in selected patients. Techniques for hysteroscopy have been used sporadically for many years with limited acceptance. However, with recent advances in instrumentation and the introduction of safe and effective methods of uterine distention, interest in hysteroscopy has been renewed.
Since its reappearance on the modern clinical scene, hysteroscopy has added a new dimension to the ability to diagnose intrauterine disorders and has proven to be a useful surgical procedure for a selected variety of these disorders. Three types of hysteroscopes have emerged: the contact hysteroscope, the use of which does not need uterine distention, the panoramic hysteroscope with its various diagnostic and therapeutic capabilities, and most recently, the microhysteroscope with its multiple magnifications and vast clinical applications. These are complementary rather than competing instruments.
