Abstract

The present study is an attempt to evaluate the chances for the genotoxic effects of injectable hormonal contraceptives (Depo-Provera) on human chromosomes.
In this study, metaphase chromosomes from short term blood lymphocyte culture of twenty women received injectable hormonal contraceptives (Depo-Provera) and fifteen unexposed women were studied.
The first group was using Depo-Provera for periods, ranging from three to thirty nine months. The second is a control group who has not been on contraceptive treatment for any period of t ime.
Examination of chromosomal preparation reveals different chromosome structural changes in form of breaks, gaps, dicentrics, deletions and fragments. Also certain proportion of satellite association was detected.
But these changes were not statistically significant. No significant correlation between the frequency of injections, age, exposure to pills and the chromosomal aberrations in the study group.
To conclude, receiving depo-provera every 3 months does not lead to significant chromosomal changes.
