Abstract In recent years, computer applications have become increasingly common in hospital worldwide. The adoption of these applications offers many advantages for improving the clinical and administrative performance within a hospital to promote quality and safety care. The aim of the present study was to investigate the extent of use of computer applications in Alexandria hospitals, describe characteristics of computer applications in hospitals, identify use and intensions of administrators towards the use of computer applications in hospital, and to assess physicians’ knowledge about, attitudes towards, and the use of computers in general, as well as its applications in medicine. The study was conducted at all MOHP, HIO and private hospitals in Alexandria with a number of beds of twenty five or more. These amointed to 45 hospitals. 15 of them were Ministry of health and population (MOHP) hospitals, 3 were health insurance organization (HIO) hospitals, 7 were voluntary (not-for-profit) hospitals, and 20 were private (for profit) hospitals. The study population consisted of administrators and heads of departments, physicians, and computer systems operators (users) in previous hospitals. Interviews were conducted with 45 administrators and 164 heads of departments to identify the computer-based applications that were in use, and the functions being supported by these applications. A total of 135 in depth interviews were conducted with users of computer applications in different departments units that used these applications. |
