Abstract

Over the last few years, minimally invasive techniques became popular diagnostic tools for establishing tissue diagnosis. They have many advantages being simple, safe, reliable, less costly and do not necessitate prolonged patient hospitalization. Percutaneous transthoracic C.T. guided needle biopsy and thoracoscopic biopsy are now used for the diagnosis of peripheral shadows. Each technique has its advantages, disadvantages and limitations.
The present study was performed on 30 patients with radiological evidence of peripheral pulmonary lesions. The patients were categorized into 2 groups:
1. 23 cases with peripheral pulmonary lesions greater than 2 cm in diameter by C.T.
2. 7 cases with peripheral pulmonary lesions less than or equals 2 cm diameter by C.T.
This classification was undertaken to clarify the diagnostic accuracy of percutaneous transthoracic C.T. guided needle biopsy and thoracoscopic biopsy.
