The aim of this work was to study the effect of therapy with inhaled glucocorttcosteroids on resting pulmonary function tests, cardiopuhnonary performance and aerobic exercise capability in children with persistent bronchial asthma.

The present study included 30 asthmatic children (Group I), 20 males and 10 females, of the age group 7-1-5 years, with the mean age of 10.70 years. This group of patients was given inhaled glucocorticosteroids in the form of fluticasone propionate (FP) in appropriate doses conforming to the reported guidelines for the treatment of asthma for a period of at least 2 months where follow up study were done for them as regards the pulmonary function tests and cardiopuhnonary exercise test data.
The study also included, for comparison, a control group consisting of 10 asthmatic children(Group II) who did not receive glucocorticosteroids in any pharmaceutical form. Initial and follow up studies similar to group I were performed after the same period (only short acting beta 2 agonists are allowed as required for the treatment of symptoms). They were 7 males and 3 females of the same age group with a mean age of 1 1.70 years.
All patients were subjected to baseline history taking, full physical examination, complete blood picture for calculation of AEC,determination of total serum igE, then a baseline and following 2 months of treatment in both groups measurement of resting pulmonary function test parameters measured by spiromernc and body plethysmographic techniques ,as well as cardiopulmonary exercise testing parameters were performed for both groups.

The followirm results were demonstrated:
