Abstract

Due to the high rate of recurrence the esophageal varices after endoscopic ban ligation many researches were conducted to find out a new technique aiming at prevention or decreasing variceal recurrence.
ND: YAG laser photocoagulation, electrocoagulation, and microwave energy are techniques that were tried in this purposes.
Argon plasma coagulation is one of the methods used for this purpose throughout inducing mucosal fibrosis.
We conducted this study to evaluate the efficacy of APC after variceal eradication by esophageal variceal ligation on variceal recurrence.
Sixty cirrhotic patients presented with bleeding esophageal varices with subsequent variceal eradication by Endoscopic variceal ligation (EVL) were selected from patients presented to endoscopy unit in National liver Institute, Menoufiya University.
They were divided into two groups each included 30 patients.
Group I: eradication of esophageal varies by EVL was followed by APC.
Group II: eradication of esophageal varies by EVL was followed by only observation ( no APC)
All patients were subjected to the following :
1- complete history.
2- Clinical examination
3- Liver tests ( ALT, AST, albumin, bilirubin total and direct ) prothromin time and concentration.
4- Abdominal U/S.
