Abstract
Pressure sores are a serious and common health problem, and they are the primary cause of death in elderly admitted to elderly homes.The aim of this study is to assess the prevalence and risk factors of pressure sores in elderly homes. This study included 250 older adults (83 males and 167 females). For data collection seven tools were used 1) An interviewing questionnaire for assessing the socio demographic characteristics, health history and knowledge of older adults as regards pressure sore risk factors, its complications and its preventive measures. 2) The risk assessment pressure sore scale which assess the physical Condition 3) Nutrition Screening initiative check- list to asses nutritional risk. 4) Braden scale for predicting pressure sore risk. 5) Assessment sheet for determining stages of pressure sores. 6) An inventory for measuring levels of depression. 7) An observation check list for assessing the elderly home environment. The results of this study revealed that pressure sores were prevalence among ten percent of the studied sample and about two thirds of them were liable to pressure sores. It was also found that the most common risk factors were obesity, over weight, hypertensive, diabetic , immobility, urinary/stool incontinence, depression and previous hospitalization.
