Methanotrophs were isolated from different Egyptian environments. Seven isolates were obtained five of which were identified as Derxia gummosa and the others as Methylobacterium organophilum. All the isolates were found to be facultative methanotrophs. Different growth conditions of methanotrophic isolates were studied aiming to maximize bacterial growth yields.
Studies proved that the capacity of methanotrophic isolates to utilize natural gas was suppressed when previously grown on methanol.
Methanotrophic isolates utilized methanol with a high rate as compared to methane, thus methanol was not obtained as an oxidation product of natural gas. Accordingly it is recommended to utilize methane monooxygenase enzyme (MMO) instead of cell cultures. In addition, due to the non specific enzymatic system characteristic to methanotrophs, they were able to oxidize some substrates other than methane and methanol. High protein content detected in methanotrophic isolates, renders them a good source for single cell protein production.
