Abstract

Objective:
The aim of this work is to measure BMD in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and to correlate it with insulin level and insulin resistance.
Subjects:
This study comprised 50 premenopausal women, 40 type 2 diabetic patients (20 on insulin therapy and 20 on oral hypoglycemic drugs), 10 control group which are healthy non diabetic women matched for age.
Methods:
All studied subjects were subjected to history taking, clinical examination, specially weight, height, BMI and waist/hip ratio and laboratory investigations including fasting and post prandial blood glucose levels, HbA1c, kidney functions, liver functions, urine analysis, lipid profile, serum calcium, phosphorus and alkaline phosphatase, fasting insulin level, BMD using DEXA on left fore- arm using Lunar PIXI densitometer .
To avoid confounding factors, the following exclusion criteria were enforced that all selected subjects must not have other disease that affect bone mineral density such as renal impairment, hepatic affection, endocrine diseases that affect bone density such as thyroid, adrenal disorders and drugs that affect BMD.
Results:
We found that there is a significant positive correlation between BMD with both HOMA and insulin level in patients with type 2 DM.
Conclusion:
There is no difference in BMD between type 2 diabetic patients and control group. There is a significant positive correlation between BMD with both insulin level and insulin resistance (HOMA) in patients with type 2 DM.
