Abstract

The present study was done to evaluate the value of cystatin C as a new marker for renal impairment among childhood cancer survivors as well as renal radioisotopic scan using DTPA. This study was conducted on 40 patients divided into two groups: group (A) twenty patients cured from hematological tumors and group (B) patients cured from solid tumors. All patients were subjected to measurement of serum creatinine, creatinine clearance, serum cystatin c using ELISA technique and renal radioisotopic scan by DTPA. Twenty healthy children matching our patients in age and sex were included in our study as a control group and were subjected to measurement of serum creatinine , creatinine clearance and serum cystatin c.
The results of this study showed a significant elevation in serum cystatin c levels among cases(2,49+0,817mg/dl) and decrease in creatinine clearance (131+12,9ml/min) with a high sensitivity and specificity index of cystatin C than currently used methods .
The present study showed that serum cystatin c was not affected by age or sex. There was positive significant correlation between serum cystatin c and serum creatinine and negative correlation with both creatinine clearance and glomerular filtration rate (GFR).
