Adopting tourism development as an economic base for promoting and applying comprehensive development has revealed, recently, a new paradigm as a, means for development; a*much as possible, tourism win support -development rather than development supporting tourism. The approach was adopted by developed countries as-well «s developing ones. It was set to have a great deal of advantages especially environmental ones against very limited disadvantages.
Egypt is a developing country with limited industrialised potentialities. However, Egypt has a highly scenic, almost incomparable, natural and man-made heritage, which is to form the required assets for a new tourism development product, and has adopted the above approach. However, after more than 30 years of adopting and applying tourism development, the process has proved to have a great deal of negative impacts on the tourism development destinations and regions. Such impact varies between environmental, socio-cultural and economic problems. Not only that but the high unstable political situation of the region, the Middle East, has one of the greatest negative impacts on the Egyptian tourism industry. Such realities formed an inevitable need, for a new tourism development paradigm or approach that has the ability to overcome such identified negative impacts
The researcher emphasises the there is a need to introduce the sustainability concept to overcome the tourism development impacts especially the environmental, socio-cultural and economic ones through the ability to apply and promote sustainable tourism development in changing market conditions- One of the fundamental principles of adopting and applying sustainable tourism as stated by Gunn (1994) i& to have the ability to innovate (Gunn, 1994). Innovate here means to create a mix between the established principles of the sustainability approach and the development reality, aiming to achieve a practicable approach that has the ability to;
• be applied;
Consequently the research emphasises the importance of being able to apply, implement and promote a sustainable tourism product through enhancing the role and partidpation of the national tourism.
The research methodology was based on its theoretical contributions where the role of the tourism planning process and the designing stage in promoting, applying and implementing sustainable tourism development was emphasised. It was argued that the design process would have the greatest impact on satisfying theueeds of the TD demand side while at the same time saving .the assets of the supply side for the current as well as the future generation thus feeiog able to promote sustainabilky. Accordingly the research conducted primary and secondary analytical studies that aimed to investigate the demand and supply sides of the Tourism development process. The results and findings are utilised in a final analytical correlation study reaching the research final findings and results concerning the problem of applying sustainable tourism.
