Abstract

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the efficiency of the Kussick’s tongue retrainer in correcting Tongue thrust habit and the accompanying dental and skeletal changes in patients with class I mal occlusion and dental anterior open bite for a follow up period 1 year.
The sample consisted of 20 children with an age ranged 8-10 years.
For each patient, study models as well as lateral cephalometric and panoramic X-rays were done at the start of treatment. Each patient was recalled every 6,9 and 12 months for check up to evaluate the patient’s compliance with treatment.
After 1 year, lateral cephalograms and study casts were taken to assess the treatment effects and to compare the results with those at the start of treatment. Lateral cephalograms were traced and certain landmarks, lines and parameters were utilized to assess the progress of the treatment at the end of the follow up period.
Each patient was instructed to wear the appliance at night and 3 hours daily.
The pre-treatment and post-treatment readings were statistically analyzed using the paired t-test when the measurements were nonnally distributed; and the Wicoxon Signed Rank Test (WSRT) when they were not.
The results revealed that the Kussick’s tongue retrainer had no significant skeletal effect except for mandibular plane inclination which is represented by the MP/SN angle which decreased significantly, this result might be attributed to normal growth. On the other hand, the upper and lower incisors exhibited a significant retroclination, contributing to the correction of the open bite. Regarding the overjet. and openbite, they showed a significant decrease at the end of the follow up period.
The sample was divided into 2 groups; Group I (12 cases) consisted of those that achieved positive overbite at the end of the follow-up period and Group 11 (6 cases) consisted of those who remained with a negative overbite at the end of the follow-up period. A comparison has been done among the mean values of their different parameters. The means for each variable were compared using t-test. No significant changes were found in
