Abstract
This work is concerned with studying CMV infection in older people as regards state of re-infection or reactivation compared with young people. Both saliva and plasma from two age groups are tested for CMV specific IgG and IgM antibodies using ELISA technique.
Current study results are consistent with those reported by Hoang and co-workers Their study reported that male blood donors less than 40 years old are more frequently sero-positive to CMV than older subjects.
Anti-CMV IgG in plasma is found not to correlate with IgG positivity in saliva. This is more obvious when saliva from older people is tested than saliva from young subjects. Whether in older or younger age group, it could be concluded that saliva examination for anti-CMV IgG alone is inadequate and cannot replace plasma examination in detection of sero-positivity during epidemiology surveys.
