Abstract

Vitamin A deficiency (VAD) is the most important cause of childhood blindness in developing countries. It also contributes significantly to morbidity and mortality from common childhood infections and increases the risk of maternal deaths. Vitamin A supplementation is an important strategy to control VAD. In 1999, Egypt adopted a national vitamin A supplementation program, where vitamin A capsules are to be given to all under –five children linked to immunization and to all mothers post-natally in all maternity hospitals of the Ministry of Health and Population (MOHP) and maternity homes. The present study was designed to asses the current status of vitamin A supplementation to children and mothers in Alexandria Governorate over three years (2000-2002). The study was carried out at the Information and Decision-Making Support Center of the Alexandria Health Directorate, the Maternal and Child Health Department of the Alexandria Health Directorate and facilities providing the capsules to mothers and children including: A sample of recently delivered mothers that was obtained from 3 maternity hospitals and 5 maternity homes ( a total of 130 mothers). A systemic random sample of 1:3 of mothers attending vaccination clinics with their children ( a total sample of 730 mothers). The following methods and tools were used for collection of data: 1-Interview with the managing director of the program using an open-ended questionnaire to get information about all program activities
