Abstract The current investigation was conducted to evaluate clinically, radiographically and histologically three approaches used for the management of deep, interproximal, periodontal osseous defects in chronic periodontitis patients. The use of a bilayer collagen barrier was compared to that of anorganic bovine mineral when applied separately, or combined together. Accordingly, the study comprised two main sections; a clinical and radiographic section to evaluate treatment outcome in human subjects and a histologic section using an experimental dog model. A total number of eleven systemically healthy, chronic periodontitis patients were recruited for the clinical study. Prior to . surgery, they were placed on a comprehensive oral hygiene program. Full-mouth scaling and root planing were performed. This phase lasted till the O’Leary plaque index(42) approached a value of about 10% and . the papillary bleeding index(424) approached zero. |
