Abstract

Material and methods: We drd preoperative endoscopic ultrasonography and laparoscopic intraoperative cholangiography on 30 cases. Selection was based on history, clinical evaluation, elevated liver enzymes, dilated CBD with or without stones in the CBD by ultrasound. Results: 1 (23.3%) patients had a negative study by both BUS and IOC. 20 (90%) patients had a positive EUS and IOC and we succeeded in CBD stone extraction in 18 cases (out of the 20). Two cases with impacted stones,we did extraction via ERCP. In 3 patients, EUS was positive and IOC was negative we did postoperative ERCP and we found CBD stones in all 3 patients. ERCP and stone extraction was done for these patients. Mean hospital stay was 2 days. There was a 10-% morbidity related to IOC not EUS we had no mortality rate. Conclusion’. The results obtained suggest that EUS is more accurate than IOC for diagnosis of CBD stones with no morbidity or mortality and it should be used for patients suspected to have CBD stones prior to surgery.
