Abstract

Literature review cited that chronic renal failure has become ¬significant health problem for patients, these patients need proper education especially for dietary management which is a crucial intervention for improving nutritional status, renal function tests and serum electrolytes so the purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of providing teaching interventions related to dietary management on nutritional status, laboratory values and electrolyte balance for patients with chronic renal failure. The study sample was purposive in nature, consisted of 35 male & female adult patients on hemodialysis. The data collection phase was completed over 8 months in Menoufyia governorate hospitals (Shebin El-¬Kom University, Quesna and Berket Elsabaa hospitals) at dialysis units, The studied sample consisted of (19) females and (16) males, their age was ranged between 30 and 60 years with a mean age of (46.51 + 10’,17). Subjects were pre and post tested (tools implementation). A constructed interviewing questionnaire sheet was used to collect demographic and medical data in addition to knowledge about diet. As well, assessment sheet was used to assess patient’s nutritional status, renal function tests and serum electrolytes. Findings revealed that (a) the mean knowledge scores post intervention has significantly increased than the pre intervention scores (b) There was an improvement in patients’ nutritional status after implementation of the program and (c) There was an improvement in patients’ renal function tests after conduction of the program. In conclusion, the study findings pointed out that the enrichment of patients’ knowledge about diet of chronic renal failure and its management seemed to have a positive impact or improvement of nutritional status and renal function tests. Replication of the study on a larger probability, sample IS recommended.
