Abstract

Biomechanics is the branch of science that deals with the effects of energy and forces on biological systems. The musculoskeletal system, although complex, obeys the basic laws of mechanics. Orthopedic biomechanics has focused on the effects -motions and deformation- of forces and moments acting on tissues such as bone, cartilage, growth plate, ligaments, meniscus, and tendons. Bone is a complex structure which supports vertebrates and plays an integral role in maintaining a homeostatic environment within the human body. The function of this complex hierarchical structure is analogous to a classical symphony: Individual notes and other basic symbols (sharps, clef signs, etc.) are the basic building blocks of an orchestral piece. These basic structures are arranged in a particular manner by the composer to form a higher order of structure, or a musical phrase. Common phrases, musical themes, and instrument sounds are then - combined to form yet a higher order of structure. The entire symphonic piece includes the individual note, phrase, and movement levels of hierarchy. In addition to the structural depth of this hierarchical level, the symphonic level also contains many functional and behavioral aspects like the functional abilities of the individual players, the conductor’s
