Abstract

with chronic cholecystitis (either calcular or non-calcular). This study included twenty patients with chronic calcular cholecystitis documented by abdominal ultrasound. Their mean age was 36.25 ± 7.144 yeas. Seventeen patients were females (85%), and only three patients were males (15%). This study also included twenty patients with chronic non-calcular cholecystitis documented by clinical presentation and signs of chronic inflammatory changes in spite of absence of gall bladder stones by abdominal ultrasound. Their mean age was 36.35 ± 7.278 years. Sixteen patients were females (80%), and only four patients were males (20%). Ten normal subjects also included in this study as controls and not suffering form any biliary or upper gastrointestinal pathology. Their mean age was 36.80 ± 7.315 years. Eight subjects were females (80%) and only two subjects were males (20%). Both types of patients and controls were matching as regards age, sex and body mass index.
Gall bladder motility was measured by calculation of the ejection fraction (EF) which is the percent of the ejected bile out of the fasting gall bladder volume following a standard fatty meal in both types of patients and controls. Comparison between controls and both types of patients as regards gall bladder motility parameters showed that there was no significant difference in the mean FV between controls and both types of patients, while the mean RV was significantly lower and the mean EF was significantly higher among controls compared to both types of patients.
