Abstract

Static VAR compensators are new comers to the power system field Since two decades ago. They are used in several applications for system voltage maintenance and stabilization at all operating conditions; steady-state and transient. They consist mainly of reactors and capacitors controlled by thyristor circuits through sophisticated control systems of firing angles. Upto now static VAR compensators are controlled by conventional conttrol systems. Adaptive controls which are more superior than the conventional ones are applied to the excitation systems controls and not yet to the static VAR compensators control. In this study Static VAR compensators used for power system oscillations damping and stabilization are proposed to be controlled using the recent adaptive and logistic controllers, which are:
* Self-tuning adaptive controllers.
* Multivariable self-tuning adaptive controllers.
* Model Reference adaptive-controllers.
* Optimal Variable structure adaptive controllers.
* Pole placement Variable structure adaptive controllers.
* Variable structure Neural Network controllers.
* Self-tuning Neural Network controllers.
* Fuzzy Logic adaptive controllers.
* Multivariable Fuzzy Logic adaptive controllers.
* Model reference Fuzzy Logic controllers.
* Neuro-Fuzzy adaptive controllers.
The feasibility of using such adaptive controllers for SVC control in order to damp electromechanical oscillations is confirmed through time simulations of power system responses, subjected to all to many possible disturbances. It is proved the adopted adaptive logistic controllers contribute effectively in electromechanical oscillations damping. They are found to be more superior than conventional controllers.
