Abstract

The aim of this work has been to study the histology and histochemistry of the telencephalon (olfactory system and cerebral hemispheres) of a reptile Chalcides ocellatus during its successive embryonic stages compared with the adult. For this, eight embryonic stages were selected from stage 1 (11 mm) to stage 8 (45 mm). Using a number of histological and histochemical techniques, the study revealed the following points:
a- Histology of the olfactory system
B- Histology of the cerebral hemispheres
C- Histochemistry of the olfactory system
D- Histochemistry of the cerebral hemispheres
It was concluded that the telencephalon of reptiles is similar to that of other animal groups in certain respects and differ in other. The similarities were most in the olfactory system while as the hemispheres differ in varying extents with amphibians, birds and mammals. The histochemical results obtained were explained to be in accordance with the needs of the growing embryonic tissues.
