المستخلص

Large Egyptian cities have faced a very dramatic phenomenon, namely the visual pollution which emerged due to many historical and sociological changes in the latest years of this century. This work has analytically studied this phenomenon in order to find out what should be done to face this problem.
The Thesis has been divided into four chapters:
The first chapter is entitled ”An approach to deal with the problem of visual pollution in the contemporary Egyptian cities”. It includes two parts, the first part is a historical study about the ancient Egyptian cities during both the Pharaonc and Islamic eras, dealing with the effective factors that gave each era its especial symptom and fulfilled many of the architecture and environmental values and achieced the worthy visual character of the ancient Egyptian cities. The second part discusses the effect of western civilization and the gradual loosing of the characteristics of Islamic architecture during the era of Mohammed Ali and Ismaeel Basha in particular, and also in the era of foreign occupation when western architecture values have spread all over the country causing a civilization strangeness and loosing the fundamental architectural and climatic values. The study also shows that visual pollution has been emphasized after the economical liberation and the industrial revolution, which yielded many problems affecting the local architecture such as extensive urban growth, population explosion and many other phenomena.
The second chapter has been devoted to study the symptoms of visual pollution in the contemporary Egyptian cities. It has three parts: the first of which studied analytically the symptoms of visual pollution, namely the absence of architectural and planning rules which is represented in losing harmonic beauty, character and climatic suitability. The second part is a visual study about the loss of character in the Egyptian cities. By means of photographs it shows the images of pollution in different parts of the city, namely its regions, districts, paths (roads, streets, bridges and pavements), nodes, public open spaces and their gurniture, landmarks, borders and finally the entrances of the city. The third part of this chapter studies, in detail, the two phenomena of unplanned growth and extensive urban growth and the causing factors as well as the problems originated and their effects on the visual pollution.
The third Chapter deals with the causes of visual pollution in the Egyptian cities. The first part is concerned with historical changes that affected the architecture of this century as mainly the political, social and cultural changes. The second part is devoted to the administrative reasons of this problem such as the inefficient building regulations, breaking of the law, the exceptions, slightness or disability of executing the law, negligence of observing architectural works, stortage of guarding historical buildings and other physical reasons of pollution. The third part deals with the behavior of people, establishments and governmental authorities under the influence of some factors such as economy, culture, education and social background.
The fourth chapter is a field study about the symptoms of visual pollution in Assiut as an example of Egyptian cities. Visual analysis shows that no general character can be noticed for the city components (regions, paths, nodes, landmarks and borders).
Fuinally, the results and some recommendations have been given in order to overcome the problem of visual pollution in Egyptian cities and to avoid the cumulative effects that may happen in future in case of ignoring them.
