The diverse scope of Perioperative nursing care requires a comprehensive staff development program. Traditional needs assessment for continuing education reflects personal interests and perception rather than actual knowledge, performance and attitude deficits. A formal learning needs assessment tool is the first step in implementing an efficient, and effective training for surgical staff nurses. The present study aimed to design a training needs assessment tool for nurses working in surgical units.through1- Review the available resources pertaining to training measurement tools. 2- Investigating the actual training needs in surgical words as they perceived. 3- Verifying contents of the developed tool. The study was conducted at El Demerdash Hospital, Ain Shams University. The data collection tools were: A needs assessment tool to assess knowledge, performance and attitude of surgical staff nurses, and a questionnaire sheet to test the validity of the assessment training tool for nurses. The findings showed that the developed tool is valid and reliable to assess surgical staff nurses training needs and majority of nurses had unsatisfactory knowledge, inadequate performance and unfavorable attitude in all items of the proposed developed needs assessment tool for surgical staff nurses. The study recommended that the proposed needs assessment tool for surgical ward nurses be applied at surgical departments in assigned settings. In addition, planning for in-service training programs based on assessing nurses’ needs and motivating the nurses to participate in training are to be applied.
