Abstract 1- The aim of the present work is to study the taxonomy and morphology of cryptostigmatic, prostigmatic and mesostigmatic mites recorded in three fresh water bodies in Assiut Governorate, their horizontal distribution and their abundance throughout the year. 2- Samples were taken from the three water bodies by the modified Birge net every two weeks throughout a period of two years beginning from July 1976 till June 1978. 3- The collected mites were preserved in glass vials containing koenike`s clearing agent, and then were mounted in Hoyer`s medium. 4-The recorded mites were identified and counted and their morphology were studied. 5-The total mite catch reached its maximal number during warm periods (Spring and Summer). 6- The majority of the mites were found in water bodies with relatively slow water currents. 7- from the three studied suborders, twelve mite species were recorded, from which nine species were found to new. 8- Gryptostigmatic mite species constituted the majority of the total catch (57.82%), while prostigmatic species were the least abundant (11.27%). Mesostigmatic mite species represented 30.89% of the total catch. |
