Abstract Diabetes inellitus is a common disease and one that predispose to many coinplications that may require surgery. Most anesthetists will therefore be caring for diabetic patients periodically. Adapting a diabetic patient’s therapeutic regimen to accominodate a surgical procedure is a challenging problem. Unfortunately, there is no consensus on the optimal manner in which to manage the metabolic changes that occur during surgery in patients with diabetes .But there is general agreement that control of blood glucose avoiding either hyper or l~ypoglycemia, is of prime importance in the perioperative period in those patients. The metabolic management of NIDDM patients undergoing inajor surgery with insulin is not simple. Insulin may induce hypoglycemia and metabolic abnormalities complicating the management of anesthesia, Opinions differ however on the method of blood glucose control of NIDDM patients undergoing inajor surgery. |
