Abstract

This investigation was conducted at the Experimental Farm, Faculty of Agriculture, Kafr El-Sheikh, Tanta University, Egypt, during 1994/95 and 1995196 seasons to study the effect of NPK fert. application, storage methods and periods on sugar beet crop through the following Experiments. I. Effect of NPK levels on yield and quality of sugar beet crop: 11. Influence of methods and periods of storage of sugar beet roots on its quality characteristics: The experimental design was carried out in a complete randomized block design for the first experiment, while it was split-split plot design for the second one. N-as ammonium nitrate (33.5 % N) was added at two rates of 80 and 100 kg N/fed., K-as potassium sulphate (48% K20) was added with two rates of 24 and 48 kg K20/fed. P-as superphosphate (1 5.5% P205) was added with two rats of 15 and 30 kg P205/fed. Sugar beet cultivars (Maribo Marina Poli and Kawe mira) obtained from the Delta Company for Sugar in Kafr El-Sheikh Governorate was used in this study. All the practical operations such as thinning, hoeing, irrigation and pesticides were performed according to conventional local recommendations of the ministry of Agriculture, Egypt. The fertilization treatments include 4 treatments in each seasons as follows: 1- Application of recommended dose of NPK fertilizers (80 kg N + 15 kg P205 + 24 kg K20). 2- Application of recommended dose of PK fertilizers with excess of N (1 00 kg N + 15 kg P205 + 24 kg K20). 3- Application of recommended dose of NK fertilizer with excess of P (80 kg N + 30 kg P205 + 24 kg K20) 4- Application of recommended dose of NP fertilization with excess of K (80 kg N + 15 kg P205 + 48 kg K20). For the storage experiments, collected roots of sugar beet from each fertilization treatment were subjected to four methods of storage and three periods of storage (5, 10 and 15 days) after harvesting as follows: 1- Without covering in the field. 2- Covering with rice straw. 3- Under shading. 4- Late harvesting (harvested later by 5, 10 and 15 days).
